. Arroyo made the lead stand before turning the game

PSV Eindhovens dismal season reached a new low on Thursday by losing 1-0 at home
to Chornomorets Odesa to become the biggest name to crash out of the Europa
League. However, English Premier League side Swansea survived a defeat to St.
Gallen to advance to the last 32, joining Chornomorets, NK Maribor and Maccabi
Tel Aviv in reaching the knockout stage after the final round of group matches.
Two more places were up for grabs in the late kickoffs, with Dynamo Kyiv needing
at least a draw against Rapid Vienna to progress from Group G. PSV is a former
European champion and winner of the UEFA Cup -- the pre-cursor to the Europa
League -- but has fallen on hard times and is languishing in 10th place in the
Netherlands Eredivisie after Saturdays 6-2 humbling by Vitesse Arnhem. Phillip
Cocus side has also exited the Dutch Cup and is now out of Europe thanks to
Franck Dja Djedjes 59th-minute goal for Chornomorets, which plays in Ukraine.
PSV is without a victory in more than two months. Chornomorets qualified from
Group B with Ludogorets Razgrad. Swansea lost 1-0 at St. Gallen, with Marco
Mathys scoring the winner, but advanced as the runner-up in Group A because
Kuban Krasnodar only drew 1-1 at Valencia, which had already sealed top spot.
England will have two teams in the last 32 because Tottenham has already
qualified, but Wigan failed to join them after losing 2-1 at Maribor, which
climbed to second place in Group D above Zulte Wagerem on goal difference. Zulte
lost 2-0 at home to Rubin Kazan. Maccabi Tel Aviv sealed runner-up spot in Group
F courtesy of a 1-0 home win over Bordeaux. Fiorentina went through as the
unbeaten Group F winner after a 2-1 win against FC Dnipro. Juventus, Ajax,
Benfica, Napoli, Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, Viktoria Plzen and Basel dropped down
into the Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League groups.
The draw for the 32 takes place on Monday.

. Johnny Cueto pitched seven sharp innings, Toronto
native Joey Votto hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth and the Reds beat the
Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 on Tuesday night.

against its arch rival since 2001, Canada dropped its latest contest -- a
friendly between the two nations on Friday night -- 1-0 on a goal by
Canadian-born Sydney Leroux.
Richards Jersey
. After being bested in extra innings on Monday for their
13th loss in 16 games, the Twins rode the arm of Nick Blackburn and the bat of
Denard Span to a 4-2 victory last night. Blackburn hurled his fifth career
complete game to even his season record at 4-4, while Span had three hits and
drove in a run with an RBI double during a two-run seventh inning that put
Minnesota ahead for good.

.C. Lions. The clubs former starting quarterback,
assistant and head coach returned Thursday as its receivers coach. (Sports
Network) - Johnny Cueto has excelled since returning from a season- opening
stint on the disabled list, but the Cincinnati Reds hurler may be facing his
toughest test to date when the heavy-hitting New York Yankees invade Great
American Ball Park tonight for the opener of a three-game interleague series
between 2010 playoff participants. Cueto missed the seasons first five weeks
after experiencing arm soreness in the spring, but has shown no signs of rust
upon returning to the Cincinnati rotation. The talented righty has posted a
stellar 1.68 earned run average in eight starts since being activated in early
May and allowed two runs or fewer in all but two of those appearances. The
native Dominican has been especially good as of late. Cueto racked up a
season-best eight strikeouts and yielded just four hits over seven shutout
innings to defeat San Francisco on June 9, then followed up by limiting the
Dodgers to one unearned run and five hits through seven frames in a 3-2 Reds
victory last Tuesday. Hes thrown seven innings or more in four consecutive
starts and permitted a total of only four runs during that span. Cueto has
opposed the Yankees one time previously, which took place in New York during his
rookie campaign of 2008. The 25-year-old held the Bronx Bombers to just one run
while fanning seven over five strong innings in that contest, but still wound up
receiving a tough-luck loss in a 4-1 Reds setback. Hell be taking on a potent
New York offense that has swatted a major-league best 105 homers and ranks
second overall in runs scored, and the unit has been quite productive over the
past week. The Yankees have amassed 42 runs during a 5-1 stretch heading into
tonights matchup, and reached double digits for the third time during that
period in Sundays 10-4 triumph over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. New York
did most of its damage against the Chicago bullpen in last nights tilt, scoring
three times in the top of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie and three more in
the ninth to put the contest out of reach. The Yankees finished the night with
13 hits, six of which went for extra bases. Nick Swisher had the biggest blow
for the Yankees, crushing a three-run homer off reliever Chris Carpenter in the
eighth that gave his team a 7-4 lead. Curtis Granderson later provided some
insurance with an RBI triple in the ninth, while Mark Teixeira and Alex
Rodriguez delivvered back-to-back run- scoring doubles to cap the
scoring.dddddddddddd Swisher ended 3-for-5 with four RBI and both Rodriguez and
Brett Gardner collected three hits to help CC Sabathia earn his ninth win of the
season. The All-Star southpaw was touched for four runs in seven innings of
work, but managed to keep the Cubs off the scoreboard in each of his last four
frames. Its not really hard when youve got the offense that we have and you can
really believe that if you can stop it right here, weve got a good chance of
winning, said Sabathia afterward. With this offense that we have and the guys we
have in the lineup, if you can stop the bleeding, youve got a really good chance
of winning the game. Ivan Nova, who gets the call for New York in tonights
opener, knows all about how prolific his teams lineup can be. The rookie has
received a whopping 23 runs of support over his last two starts, winning both to
improve his 2011 record to 6-4. Nova benefited from the Yankee bats in his most
recent outing, a 12-4 verdict over Texas last Wednesday in which the
right-hander surrendered four runs and walked three over 5 2/3 innings. He was
sharp in his previous start, however, holding Cleveland to two runs and only
four hits through seven innings to help New York to an 11-7 decision. The
24-year-old will be meeting Cincinnati for the first time and owns a 2-2 record
with a 3.95 ERA in six appearances on the road this season, five of which have
been starts. The Reds have been able to handle New York in the past, having
prevailed in four of the six lifetime interleague bouts between the teams, but
havent fared well against the AL so far this season. Cincinnati lost its first
five interleague tests of 2011 before finally breaking through on Sunday, when
the club bested Toronto in a 2-1 squeaker at Great American Ball Park. Bronson
Arroyo tossed eight outstanding innings to lead the way for the Reds, while
Miguel Cairo put Cincinnati on top with a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom
of the sixth inning. Arroyo made the lead stand before turning the game over to
closer Francisco Cordero in the ninth, with the veteran righty permitting just
five hits and one walk while striking out five for the game. That was great, we
needed that, Reds manager Dusty Baker said of Arroyos performance. Thats why hes
one of the stabilizers on the staff, to stop losing streaks like that.
